Age Related Expectations

Following the introduction of a new National Curriculum framework from September 2014, the government has also decided to remove level descriptors. For the academic year 2015/2016 the government is replacing levels with children’s performance descriptors or age related expectations. These are closely aligned to the new National Curriculum.

The Age Related Expectations (ARE) indicate what a child will be working on during that academic year and what they are expected to know by the end of that year in the core areas of the curriculum; speaking and listening, reading, writing and maths. These are taken directly from the National Curriculum.

Although schools may track ARE expectations in different ways, the standards set are national and apply to all children.

From summer 2016, pupils will sit new tests at the end of KS1 and KS2. Attainment in the new tests will be identified by a scaled score where 100 represents the national standard, broadly 2b for KS1 and 4b for KS2.

KS1 tests will be administered to all pupils in Y2 during May 2016 and marked by the class teacher. The results will be used as part of the wide range of evidence which informs teacher assessment judgement which is reported for every child. The tests are in spelling, grammar & punctuation, reading and maths.

KS2 tests will be administered to all pupils in Y6 on prescribed days 9th – 12th May 2016. The raw test results will be converted to a scaled score which schools have a statutory duty to report. These tests are in spelling, grammar & punctuation, reading and maths. There will be no additional tests for the few children who may be working beyond the expectation of the primary curriculum.
